Soirée caritative au profit des sinistrés de Foulpointe, Madagascar, 5. novembre 2016
On Sunday 11 September 2016 disaster struck again in Foulpointe, a small coastal town in eastern Madagascar. For the second time since 2009 a fire broke out and destroyed many of the traditional houses, which in this region are roofed with thatch made of the fronds of the traveller’s palm (ravinala madagascariensis), known locally as falafa. The Anglican priest in Foulpointe, the Rev. Tongasoa, was one of the many made homeless by the fire. He has opened the Anglican church of Foulpointe to house five families, but the church building itself can only offer rudimentary shelter: in 2014 it was destroyed in a cyclone. St. Alban’s donated money then to provide building materials for the church, and at least in the meantime a new roof has been built. However, the families now housed there have lost everything; in particular they need cooking utensils, and of course the means to rebuild their houses.
That is why ACAMA, the association of Malgache Anglicans in Alsace, is organising a Soirée Caritative on Saturday 5 November 2016 in the Salle des Fêtes du Baggersee at lllkirch. (see attached flyer).
Starting at 21.00h there will be music (provided by Hazo Ala) and delicious Malagache food. All are invited to attend and combine having a good time with supporting a fellow Anglican community. Donations are welcomed to ACAMA (details below), tax receipts are available if required.
The Anglican Church of the Virgin Mary in Foulpointe is very dear to the hearts of the Malgache Anglicans in Strasbourg, as Foulpointe (originally known as Hopeful, then Walk-on Point) was where the first Anglican missionaries to Madagascar landed in 1864. The Rev. William Hey and the Rev. John Holding of the S.P.G. (Society for the Propagation of the Gospel) were in their mid-twenties when they arrived. Hey set up a small Mission church in a village 12 miles south of Tamatave, on the eastern coast, where today there is a stele of remembrance, and with Holding translated parts of the Book of Common Prayer into Malagasy.
“Hey died soon from the effects of the climate and the hardships to which he was exposed; and Holding, after repeated attacks of fever, had to return in 1969 to England permanently … For several years Holding was the only ordained missionary of the Church of England, ‘clergyman, schoolmaster, musician, printer, doctor and general manager; and yet he made good progress. Baking Bredele and enjoying the authentic Christmas taste of Alsace
Christmas in Alsace is unthinkable without Bredele (literally “little breads” in Alsatian), those melt-in-your-mouth, savour-the-flavour little biscuits that make pre-Christmas weight-watching so difficult to keep up. They are made to an infinite variety of different recipes, often handed down from generation to generation of baking mothers and daughters, and consist mainly of ground nuts and coconut, eggs, spices, chocolate, flour and sugar. We are fortunate indeed to have in our Church a proven mistress of the art of Bredele baking, Anny Samuels. And she will be happy to share the secret of perfect Bredele baking with all those interested – for a good cause, bien entendu. The Bredele then baked by afficionados on three Saturdays in November and December will be on sale after church in the coffee room on Sundays 11th and 18th December. The proceeds will go to help the charitable projects our Church supports.
All are welcome to join in ! Baking Bredele is a wonderful way to be creative and see the results of one’s labours, enjoy good company and have a good laugh.

Sunday morning is often a stressful time for parents: not only do they have the kids (and themselves) to get out of bed and to church on time, but there’s also the Sunday lunch to think about. At least the Sunday lunch on 16 October shouldn’t be a problem if you take advantage of our offer of the Sunday hamper, the Panier du dimanche. It’s all there: entrée, main course and pudding. The money you give for your Sunday Hamper/Panier du dimanche goes to people in need in France, Madagascar and Pakistan, to suport causes that the charitable association of our church ACAS has adopted in our name. The more you give, the more we can do, for instance to alleviate the need of the Anglican church and people in Foulpointe, Madagascar, whose town was recently ravaged by a fire.

ACAS Management report 2015
ACAS is the association which implements the philanthropic work of the Church. It is the tangible expression in the city and the world of our church’s love and care for those in need. The association organizes a series of activities throughout the year to raise funds, which it then distributes across several projects both in Strasbourg and in the world. The association depends on Church members’ involvement and contributions to be able to offer help to those who are in need of support.
Projects supported by ACAS
In 2015 we were able to finance tuition fees for students in Pakistan, which is a project which started some years ago and has good results. In Madagascar, we continued the support to the Church in Foulpointe as we had committed to do last year, and we also supported this year the Tananarive School. ACAS sends money each year for the Bishop’s Appeal; last year we were able to contribute both to the Lent and the Advent Appeals. The Lent Appeal focused on assisting migrants in Athens, while the Advent Appeal focused on the Apostoli and Lighthouse refugee relief projects in Greece on the islands of Lesvos, Chios, Samos and Kos.
Locally we supported both CASAS and the CIMADE, which are organizations which help migrants and asylum seekers here in Strasbourg. We exceptionally supported a Haitian medical student, who was facing huge difficulties in financing his studies. He managed to pass his exams and is now continuing his studies. We also raised funds to support the work organized by the Fédération d’Entraide Protestante (FEP) to help Syrian refugees cope with the trauma of war and exile via psychological support. Unfortunately, so far very few refugees have arrived in Strasbourg and the psychologist the FEP intended to hire was not needed, so this money has not yet been allocated. In case the needs for Syrian refugee support in Strasbourg do not increase in 2016 we will donate the funds to an organisation supporting Syrian refugees elsewhere.
Contributions to ACAS
Everyone can contribute to the charitable work of the Church by:
* volunteering for activities organised by ACAS, such as collecting items for the Dorlisheim flea market, bringing items from Strasbourg to Dorlisheim, manning the stand at the flea market, tidying, bringing unsold material to Emmaus, joining the bredele cooking task force, joining the ACAS Burns’ Night team which operates the bar at this yearly event of the English speaking community, initiating a new fundraising activity or organising an activity to support or bring comfort to vulnerable people.
* buying items sold by the charity, e.g. products from the Sunday Hampers, Christmas cookies, Christmas cards, raffle tickets, calendars or, in the coming year, also bookmarks
* contributing in kind and donating items for the Dorlisheim flea market or the raffle, preparing food for the Sunday Hampers, sending pictures for the calendar
* donating funds to the ACAS association. ACAS being a “organisation à but non lucratif” it can receive donations and issue tax receipts. An official registering procedure with the Préfecture called “procédure de rescrit fiscal” will be finalised soon in order to make doubly sure that members never have any problems with the tax authorities.
ACAS Rapport de gestion 2015
L’ACAS est le bras caritatif de l’église. L’association est l’expression concrète d’amour et d’empathie de l’église dans la ville et le monde. L’association organise une série d’actions tout au long de l’année pour récolter des fonds qu’elle répartie ensuite entre différents projets à Strasbourg et dans le monde. L’association dépend de l’engagement des membres de l’église et de leurs contributions pour être en mesure d’aider ceux qui en ont besoin.
Projets soutenus par ACAS
En 2015 nous avons pu financer l’écolage pour des étudiants au Pakistan, un projet qui a démarré il y a quelques années déjà et obtient de bons résultats. A Madagascar, nous avons continué notre soutien à la reconstruction de l’église à Foulpointe comme nous nous y étions engagés l’an dernier, et avons par ailleurs soutenu l’école à Tananarive. L’ACAS envoie chaque année de l’argent pour l’appel de l’évêque, l’année dernière nous avons pu contribuer aux appels du Carême et celui de l’Avent. L’appel du Carême était focalisé sur l’aide aux migrants à Athènes et celui de l’Avent sur le soutien aux projets de soutien aux réfugiés « Apostoli » et « Lighthouse » en Grèce sur les îles de Lesbos, Chios, Samos et Kos. Localement nous avons soutenu CASAS et la CIMADE, qui sont des associations qui soutiennent les migrants et demandeurs d’asile ici à Strasbourg. Exceptionnellement nous avons également soutenu financièrement un étudiant en médecine haïtien qui était confronté à des difficultés importantes concernant le financement de ses études. Il a réussi ses examens et continue à présent ses études. Nous avons également récolté des fonds pour contribuer à l’action initiée par la Fédération d’Entraide Protestante (FEP) pour aider les réfugiés syriens à surmonter les traumatismes liés à la guerre et l’exil, via une aide psychologique. Malheureusement peu de réfugiés ont jusqu’à présent été accueillis à Strasbourg et le psychologue que la FEP comptait recruter n’a pas encore été nécessaire, cet argent n’a donc pour le moment pas été alloué. Au cas où les besoins en termes de soutien aux réfugiés syriens à Strasbourg n’augmentent pas en 2016 nous reverserons cet argent à une organisation soutenant les réfugiés syriens ailleurs.
Contribuer a ACAS
Il est possible de contribuer au travail caritatif de l’Eglise de diverses manières:
* se porter volontaire pour les activités telles la collecte d’objets pour le marché au puces de Dorlisheim, le transport de Strasbourg à Dorlisheim, la tenue du stand lors du marché aux puces, le rangement et le dépôt des objets non vendus à Emmaüs. Il est aussi possible de rejoindre la taskforce bredele ou l’équipe de l’ACAS qui s’occupe du bar lors du Burns’ Night, un événement annuel de la communauté anglophone, d’initier une nouvelle activité de collecte de fonds ou d’organiser une activité visant à soutenir ou réconforter des personnes vulnérables
* acheter les objets vendus par l’association comme par exemple les produits du Panier du Dimanche, les bredele, cartes de Noël, tickets de tombola, calendriers, ou bien encore cette année, les marques pages
* contribuer en nature en donnant des objets pour le marché aux puces de Dorlisheim ou la tombola, en préparant des plats pour le Panier du Dimanche, ou encore en envoyant des images pour le calendrier
* effectuer des donations à l’association : ACAS est une organisation à but non lucratif et peut donc recevoir des donations et délivrer des reçus fiscaux. Une procédure de rescrit fiscal auprès de la préfecture sera bientôt finalisée pour garantir la conformité légale.
Brocante pour nos aides caritatives à Dorlisheim, dimanche le 12 juin
Le village de Dorlisheim, près de Molsheim, se transforme chaque été en paradis du chineur car les ruelles et cours se remplissent de tables et stands pour la brocante annuelle. Le révérend John Murray et son épouse Diane sont les heureux propriétaires d’une maison à Dorlisheim bénéficiant d’une grand cour; au cours des quelques dernières années, ils ont permis à l’ACAS, l’association caritative émanant de notre église, d’y installer ses stands pour vendre tout ce qui peut être vendu pour trouver les fonds requis pour nos aides caritatives. Ils offrent également un magnifique repas pour soutenir les bénévoles dans leurs efforts!
L’aide requise peut prendre diverses formes:
L’ACAS a besoin de choses à vendre! – N’hésitez donc pas à retourner vos tiroirs, vider vos armoires, à voir sous vos lits comme dans vos caves et déterminez ce dont vous n’avez plus besoin et qui pourrait trouver preneurs ailleurs. Par le passé, nombreux ont été les objets en porcelaine, en verre, les chaussures, les sacs et les jouets, pour ne mentionner que quelques exemples, qui ont trouvé des amateurs. Les vêtements devraient être propres et prêts à porter, les jouets intacts etc. Maryline William-Smith offre généreusement d’entreposer tout ceci dans son garage au 7 rue des Ducs, dans le Vieux Cronenbourg. Des bénévoles sont tout autant bienvenus le dimanche 12 juin à partir de 7h00 pour mettre en place les tables etc., disposer les objets mis en vente et s’occuper des stands.
D’autres bénévoles seront bienvenus pour prendre la relève et tenir les stands tout au long de la journée.
Enfin, des bénévoles sont bienvenus pour nettoyer après la vente puis rapporter les invendus à l’association “Emmaüs”.
L’année dernière l’ACAS avait collecté plus de 800 € lors de la brocante, grâce aux efforts concertés de bon nombre de donateurs et bénévoles. Cet événement vaut bien nos efforts, car il est important de trouver les fonds nécessaires pour soutenir les projets à Madagascar, au Pakistan tout comme à Strasbourg. Qui plus est, on s’y amuse beaucoup !
Flea Market / Brocante at Dorlisheim, 12 June 2016
Every summer the village of Dorlisheim, near Molsheim, is transformed into a paradise for bargain-hunters as tables and stalls fill the streets and courtyards for the annual flea market. The Revd. John Murray and his wife Diane have a house in Dorlisheim with a large courtyard; for the past few years they have enabled ACAS, the charitable association affiliated to our church, to set up stalls there and sell whatever seems to be saleable to raise money for our charitable giving. They also provide wonderful food to sustain the helpers !
Help is required in many ways:
ACAS needs things to sell ! – So please look through drawers, cupboards, under beds and in cellars and see what you don’t need and think could find a home elsewhere. In the past china, glassware, jewellery, shoes, handbags, children’s toys have all found takers, to mention just a few items. Clothes should be wearable and clean, toys etc. intact. Maryline William-Smith has kindly offered to store these items in her garage at 7 rue des Ducs, Cronenbourg. Please contact her by email to arrange a time to drop your donations off: maryline.neuschwander@orange.fr.
Helpers are needed on Saturday, 11 June, to transport the donated items from Cronenbourg to Dorlisheim.
Helpers are also needed on Sunday 12 June at 7.00am to set up tables etc, put out the items for sale and man the stalls. Other helpers are needed to take over from the early shift and man the stalls later in the day. And finally: helpers are needed to clear up afterwards and eventually take the unsold items to “Emmaüs”.
Last year ACAS raised over €800 at the flea market, thanks to the concerted efforts of numerous donors and helpers. It is worthwhile, it is important to raise money to support projects in Madagascar, Pakistan and in Strasbourg, and it is, incidentally, great fun !
ACAS Dorlisheim Brocante
a record year
Our ACAS Charity Association will this year have a bumper display as people have been exceptionally generous. We had to use 11 full car loads to transport it all to Dorlisheim.
On Sunday 14th June, the whole village of Dorlisheim is organising a massive brocante, with lots of food stands and fun rides for the children. You can wander round the village to your heart’s content, looking for the elusive plate or cup you would like to complete Grandma’s service !! Or yet another gnome for your garden collection!
Why not decide to come over and visit after church? The ACAS core team, Anny, Johanna, Maryline, Pauline, Victoria and the Youth Club members have worked very hard to set everything up and they would love to see you there.
Especially this year, we are extremely grateful to Diane and John Murray for letting us use their yard and outbuildings again. Your Charity Association needs your support.
